5th ANNUAL ICE CYCLE set for FEBRUARY 1ST

IceCycle 2014

Saskatoon Cycles wants you to grab your mitts and helmets!

“Saskatoon Cycles is proud to announce that the Ice Cycle is back for a 5th straight year and we can’t wait to get  ‘the coldest bicycle ride on the planet’ underway”, exclaims Kamil Rogowski, Ice Cycle Coordinator.

Ice Cycle 2014 will take place on Saturday, February 1st, 2014 at the Saskatoon’s Farmer Market.  Starting at 415pm riders will be asked to gather at Ave B South and 19th St West.  The ride will begin at 430pm and will wind its way through downtown Saskatoon, with a police escort, back to the Farmer’s Market by approximately 500pm.

“This year the route will include both 4th Ave and 24th Street in support of the Better Bike Lanes project” explains Kamil.  Better Bike Lanes (www.betterbikelanes.ca) is a project by Saskatoon Cycles aimed at bringing better and safer cycling infrastructure to downtown Saskatoon this summer.

Following the ride, all participants and supporters are invited to gather inside the Farmer’s Market for some live, local music.  There will also be beer from Prairie Sun Brewery and food for purchase, with proceeds going to Saskatoon Cycles.

The Ice Cycle after-party will be a great opportunity for Saskatoon’s cycling community to come together and celebrate winter cycling in Saskatoon!

“You don’t need to be a winter cyclist to take part in Ice Cycle”, Kamil clarifies. “In fact, the majority of those who took part in our past four events were not winter cyclists. You don’t need any special winter gear to join in, just bring your bike and make sure your chain is oiled and your brakes are working and have fun!”

“Everyone, young or old, is encouraged to come out and take part, we just want to remind everyone to dress for the weather and that we will be riding snow or shine!”

Ice Cycle 2013 videos

We have some talented people who ride bikes and are interested in having other people ride bikes.

At least two of those talented video making folks took part in the Ice Cycle 2013 event we held in February. Here are there videos.

Flavio Ishi created this one.

Candice Kloebe did this one as a project for her University course on families that cycle.

And then on a much less technologically advanced note, I took Arlin's stop action photos of the Bike Parade and set them to a little music. You can point yourself out as you go by.  ;-)

IceCycle 1Our 4th Annual Ice Cycle was a smasher once again this year, with about 150 people taking part in the coldest bicycle parade on earth!  Thank you to all that came out and to those who volunteered!  It was great to see everyone having fun in the Farmer’s Market and enjoying a winter bike ride through our beautiful downtown.

IceCycle 2New at this year's Ice Cycle was a costume contest which turned out to be a bicycle-wagon-load of fun! Thanks to our host Jeff Rogstad and to our judges Heather Morrison, Daniel Fontaine, and Dylan Cooper. The winners of the contest were Maggie & the Cupids for the group costume titled 'The Spirit of Valentine,' Olive Watts dressed as 'Witch Cycle,' Hamish Watts dressed as 'Biking Viking,' and Andrey Olinov with his 'Powered by Bananas' bicycle trailer!

The World is Coming to Ice-Cycle 2013!

The Mennonite Central Committee’s (MCC) International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP) is a year-long exchange program which brings young adults from over 20 countries to volunteer full-time across Canada. IVEPers live with local host families. They get to know their communities and form close bonds with the other participants. Every February MCC gathers all participants for a mid-year-conference.  This year, 43 participants from 23 different countries, are being hosted in Saskatoon February 6th-13th

Participants will spend their week involved in educational sessions.  They will also participate in local attractions like curling, Shekinah retreat centre, Wanuskewin, and... MCC Saskatchewan is thrilled to partner with Ice-Cycle this year!
