Happy April from Saskatoon Cycles

Cathy_WattsWatts with Bikes
(A Message from Our Chair)

We have started off 2013 with a great leap. Edwards School of Business has accepted our proposal and we have two fantastic students working on a project for us. Welcome to Nena Fyke and Spencer Chilliak who have embraced the project with great enthusiasm and competence. They will be developing a strategic plan to help focus our energies on making Saskatoon a safe cycling city for all ages. We look forward to a report from them by the end of April.

Another project, proposed by our member Dr Dan Fuller will study cycling collisions from a database of incidents in Saskatoon. We interviewed four candidates in the Masters of Public Health program, and we welcome Anna Chen. This project will run from May through July. Saskatoon Cycles volunteers will be needed to help with Charlie and Cathy“on the ground” research required to analyze the collisions. Contact Dr Dan Fuller

We have written several grants to support these projects and to help un-funded groups use the bike valet for their events.

We are off to another great cycling season.

We have some talented people who ride bikes and are interested in having other people ride bikes.

At least two of those talented video making folks took part in the Ice Cycle 2013 event we held in February. Here are there videos.

Flavio Ishi created this one.

Candice Kloebe did this one as a project for her University course on families that cycle.

And then on a much less technologically advanced note, I took Arlin’s stop action photos of the Bike Parade and set them to a little music. You can point yourself out as you go by.  ;-)

Participate in Better Cycling Decisions

Please take 7 minutes to make our city a better place.

Complete this SURVEY to determine the most frequently used cycling routes in select parts of the city. (Survey is now closed and the data is being processed)

We are a group of students from the U of S carrying out a marketing research study through our Commerce 357 class. The study is being carried out on behalf of the City of Saskatoon’s Infrastructures Department and the City Council to identify  the most frequently used cycling routes in select parts of the city.

This study is one of many steps in an effort to improve the cycling experience in Saskatoon. It should only take about 7 minutes.

The survey can be found with this link.

Your participation is pivotal to this study, to help decision makers and also to help us get decent marks in our class.

The results of this study will be shared with the City of Saskatoon’s Infrastructures Department, City Council and the Saskatoon Cycles group.

If you are able to volunteer a few hours, please forward your name and email address to the Bike Valet Coordinator, Sharon.  Shifts are generally 2 hours each. Funds raised at the valet go directly to support Saskatoon Cycles.

Upcoming Bike Valet venues:

  • April 22    5:30 – 7:30 pm Unitarian Congregation Earth Day in Buena Vista Park. This evening is open to the public, join in a drumming circle and more.

New Bike tags: We tried our new credit card type bike tags at Ice Cycle. They parked 127 bikes flawlessly and they stand out nicely on the handlebars, with big, easy to read numbers. Thanks to everyone who contributed suggestions for them.

IceCycle 1Our 4th Annual Ice Cycle was a smasher once again this year, with about 150 people taking part in the coldest bicycle parade on earth!  Thank you to all that came out and to those who volunteered!  It was great to see everyone having fun in the Farmer’s Market and enjoying a winter bike ride through our beautiful downtown.

IceCycle 2New at this year’s Ice Cycle was a costume contest which turned out to be a bicycle-wagon-load of fun! Thanks to our host Jeff Rogstad and to our judges Heather Morrison, Daniel Fontaine, and Dylan Cooper. The winners of the contest were Maggie & the Cupids for the group costume titled ‘The Spirit of Valentine,’ Olive Watts dressed as ‘Witch Cycle,’ Hamish Watts dressed as ‘Biking Viking,’ and Andrey Olinov with his ‘Powered by Bananas’ bicycle trailer!

Open House on the design for the “Old City Yards”

Encouraging best practices – here’s an opportunity!

As you already know, the city has hired Perkins & Wills, a Vancouver consulting firm, to design a new city plan for (Mayor Atchison’s wish) up to 15,000 people on the “Old City Yards” in Downtown Saskatoon.

This new city plan will set the tone for whether we’ll have a walkable and bikeable city centre. Regarding this new city plan, there will be a come-and-go Open House, with a presentation at fixed times, this coming

  • Saturday (January 26) at the Farmers Market (actually in Ideas Inc. next door) from 8:00 A.M. to 1:30 P.M., see

As many people from Saskatoon Cycles as possible may want to attend this and future open houses to keep themselves up-to-date and comment on the on-going planning process.

For those who are unsure what “little details” make a GREAT city for pedestrians and cyclists, take a look at Jan Gehl’s excellent book, Cities for People, now available at the Saskatoon Public Library. The book goes into the details that need to be taken care of in a walkable and bikeable city. The book is an eye opener!

To reserve it at the library:

The World is Coming to Ice-Cycle 2013!

The Mennonite Central Committee’s (MCC) International Volunteer Exchange Program (IVEP) is a year-long exchange program which brings young adults from over 20 countries to volunteer full-time across Canada. IVEPers live with local host families. They get to know their communities and form close bonds with the other participants. Every February MCC gathers all participants for a mid-year-conference.  This year, 43 participants from 23 different countries, are being hosted in Saskatoon February 6th-13th.

Participants will spend their week involved in educational sessions.  They will also participate in local attractions like curling, Shekinah retreat centre, Wanuskewin, and… MCC Saskatchewan is thrilled to partner with Ice-Cycle this year!

Want to Feel Like You Live in the Dark Ages?

Check out the European Cycling Federation’s Newsletter:

ECF, its members, its networks and its supporters took the lead to put cycling into every agenda, from local to international. And we finished the year on a really high note because our collective efforts have secured two major successes at the EU level which show that our ambitions are possible.

Cycling and EuroVelo has been included in a crucial EU infrastructure vote on funding rules, opening the door to billions of euros of investment.

Google Maps Gives Bicycling Directions in Saskatoon

This is still in Beta. They’re missing some bike paths and you can’t drag the route into a path they don’t know about. But you can easily tell them about deficiencies. They offer distances and times (though the times don’t seem to reflect snowdepths :-)
