In response to Israel and Mexico repealing their helmet laws: No, Saskatoon does not need a mandatory helmet law but they do need the police to crack down on Bike Idiots. I cycle-commute every day year round and I see way too many traffic infractions committed by bicycles. It’s so bad that cars will habitually slow down or stop, contrary to traffic patterns, just because they see a bike. They consistently expect that the cyclist will do something stupid in total disregard for the rules of the road. I am embarrassed to be on a bicycle and yet, even as a mature, responsible adult, I too have committed those infractions simply because as a cyclist, I can easily and boldly get away with it. I wonder how many of the 129 deaths in Ontario were the cyclists fault. I understand that it’s usually troublesome fringe that is the main problem but guess what, if we identify ourselves as a cycling group we will get the rest of the bicycles lumped in with us. Isn’t part of our mandate to make cycling safe for everyone? Let’s get the police involved and clean up our reputation. That’s my soapbox for the day. Thank you.
